Seattle Mariners and baseball fans alike are saddened today to hear the passing of one of the great base stealers in the history of the game as ESPN is reporting that Maury Wills has died at the age of 89.
Wills stole 586 bases in his storied career, leading the N.L. in 6 different seasons during his 14-year playing career.
Wills had a brief stint as the M’s skipper in 1980-’81 and compiled a 26-56 record while at the helm in Seattle.
The Mariners official Twitter account also broke the news to fans on social media about an hour ago.
